from a reading at Hana's launch at Lamplight books (a very cool bookshop!). I'm very happy to put this prose/poem up here on taro baby cos I think i forgot to read the last line at the launch :P
The only ∑an i evr lo√e∂ Lives too ƒar away to touch He lives in a place where no one gets in & no one gets out We speak through the †ongµe of a land lock† angel (Just call me Angel he says) Everyday Angel visits me @ work where he e√entually catches up on some shut eye (come to think of it i never get to see his eyes He always wears ray bans) Even inside He warns me if i ever caught sight of his eyes for real my eyeballs gonna pop out of my skull & ßurst into ƒlames Then i’d literally ne√er s33 my lo√ again Then he giggles Then he says nah But serioµsly The only man i ever love∂ is a war çorrespondent in a land of endle∫∫ cloudle∫∫ ∫mokey blu ∫kies that ∫tretch way too ƒar for my ∑ortal capacity to fully çomprehen∂ its ∫heer ∑agni†u∂e it's to†al expansivene∫∫ ßµt when i sit down with an espresso during my ∑orning break i think i see geo-vital lines made by ∂em warm nor†hern winds from the other side oƒ the worl∂ in the dotted cream at ∂a bottom of my keep cup When i saw my lov get kickt outta the world peace negotiations i worried for his safety so much i woke Angel & sai∂ Angel?Angel? Could u wa†ch over earth ƒor a wee while? He says ye 0k but only if u g00gle that new Ji∑my Barnes song You know? The one where he’s waiting for the phone 2 ring but it never rings? (Lost lo√e speaks volumes) so i go googles Ji∑my Recently i found out Angel got an older brother in ∑ercy called Jimmy A family man a 1oaded man a ∂ead man walking He’s gotta much younger wife He got settled before God sent angels on missions to earth’s volatile yet tenacious holy land Angel shows me a photo (he don’t look lyk no angel to me) (he never returns none of Angels calls neither) That sux i says But Angel just ∫hrugs it off ya see Angel’s got his own plans Take for example Taumarunui He got big plans for the place BIG. FREAKY. PLANS ∂a local marae will get restored to its former glory He’s gonna turn the abandoned prison into 5 star accommodation Ye babe he says By the time i’m done there’ll be no more homelessness He gonna turn the old chateau into a library too (for me and philippa) (We’ll be the keepers) (plus Angel says philippa needs to b present to meet him at ∑idnight to discip1ine him) (but we won’t tell philippa this) Not yet (cos Angel’s too busy) Come to think oƒ it Angel spends so much time hanging around basically everywhere all the time he gets to see everything every ∂ay all at once By just being there ∂aily he sees people fall from the sky & land SMACKBANG in front of him ∂aily they ∂ie from non survivable injuries Angel tells me not to worry He hasn’t seen my lo√ fall hard n fast like that quite yet but just today (ha) there was this one lady a thirty something lady screaming blµ bloody mµrdr as she got carried off by the medics with her head spun back to front from the impact of trau∑a But this (Angel says) didn’t stop her from cussing like a demon didit (threatening 2 do ∂a same goddam leap of fury to∑orrow)
